Stephen Schartz’s ingenuity and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to unadulterated Broadway magic. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for the fall playbill.
Wicked cleverly combines political themes, unusual heroes, and unlikely romance within a medley of catchy tracks!
The story follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other.
Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices nefarious acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda - known as Glinda - marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an influential lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently wins Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her and her values. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, distance her from friends, and ruin her?
Wicked kicked off its first live performance in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new locations year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its potential to bring in audiences also motivated Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.
Wicked collected numerous awards during its prime in the 2000s, including Two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, three Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
