Wicked’s roots date back to 1900, when L. Frank Baum published his seminal novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The tale inspired the history-making 1939 motion picture The Wizard of Oz. Generations sat down to savor the timeless storyline for its colorful settings and beloved characters, including the unforgettable Wicked Witch of the West. Then in 1995, Gregory McGuire would author and publish Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The seductive title would bring about Wicked, the Broadway musical we’ve come to know and adore.

The play caught public attention in the early to mid-2000s, increasing its reach. Now, it comes to Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday 5th October 2025. You can purchase tickets from Ticket Squeeze for $179 to experience Oz’s sparkle and hidden cynicism .

Stephen Schartz’s brilliance and gift breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to flawless Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into Broadway-blockbuster Wicked, which comes to Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for the fall playbill.

Wicked cleverly combines political themes, distinctive heroes, and unlikely romance within a medley of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

Snopsis

The story follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites hardly get along at first but soon become fond of each other.

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices heinous crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for justice for the Animals, leaving everything else behind.

Meanwhile, Galinda(Glinda) climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba accidently earns Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love flourish unburdened, or will Elphaba’s agenda push Fiyero away, and destroy her?
