The story of The Lion King starts in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the little Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to take the throne and become ruler himself. The first half's sequence of incidents leads to the young prince's banishment from The Pride Lands and the tale of his consequent journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.
The musical, since its inception, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African culture and historical basis given the play's content. The narrative itself is actually based on historical African leaders and actual events – Simba being the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Malian Empire who was aptly called The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female in Broadway history to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, specifically with design, which resulted in a faultless Broadway production of the show. The outfits when seen are perfect depictions of several traditional tribes in Africa, an example of such is Simba’s costume in the play which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' attire. Just like the original 1994 movie, the remarkable musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African roots, with the musical even putting in numbers with lyrics that are performed either partially or fully in African tongue such as Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in dance numbers, with several of the dances consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired dance.
The costume design, song composition, and superb acting all blend together so well to deliver an astounding musical.
