The Story of Some Like It Hot
The show goes back to in the early 1930s just ahead of the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the mob commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re performing. Rather than have the mobster to make them a target, the musicians go on the run.
They put on costumes and, though they are cross-dressing, are able to join a touring all-female swing big band. While touring, the two fall in love with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They must keep their real identities protected, but they both hope to find romance Sugar Kane.
Whilst touring, engagements form that threaten to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI become involved, realizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups touring to performances and its ability to find new investors.
Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to a planned wedding. Eventually, everyones real identity becomes known, but none of the characters let that affect their feelings for each other. As Prohibition ends, everyone is able to move on with their new lives.
Origins
This entrancing musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It received 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. Among its four Tony Awards, it won Best Costumes and Best Choreography, meaning you’ll love the visual portions of the show as much as the beautiful music and lyrics. It features exquisite tap-dancing numbers, too.
This Broadway Show follows the captivating story told in the 1959 movie. The film starred the beautiful Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time and for generations that followed.
