Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil created the initial play script for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the identical name, Les Misérables was transformed into a theater play performed as a fully sung-through show, which was an enormous achievement in that decade.

The West End play then transferred one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until present day. Adding together all its productions since its first showing all those years ago, Les Misérables is actually the longest-running stage play in the entire world.
