Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil created the initial play script for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the identical name, Les Misérables was transformed into a theater play performed as a fully sung-through show, which was an enormous achievement in that decade.

Following a very short run in Paris, there was already a growing demand to create a more accessible version, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he fully committed and announced he was going to create an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the English songs. The English version of Les Mis initially performed with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but due to its financial success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the musical unsurprisingly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a more bustling and superior location, and ran for close to two decades. The West End play then transferred one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until present day. Adding together all its productions since its first showing all those years ago, Les Misérables is actually the longest-running stage play in the entire world.

With 37 years in West End alone and not even counting its shows in international countries, especially its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is undeniable that Les Misérables continues to be astounding in the eyes of the musical’s audiences. The storyline and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality due to the evident passion behind the mask of each character and act staged. Les Misérables has become so successful that the show has been adapted to motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on a different medium.
