In Beetlejuice, the central character, Betelgeuse, is a bio-exorcist demon who is enamored with going back to the world of the living. Once Betelgeuse gets to know that Barbara and Adam Maitland have fallen through the floor of their beloved home, he sees a chance to obtain what he wants. The recently fallen will be allowed to leave if they can convince a living person to say their name three times. His properly planned strategy quickly falls through after he learns that one of the new housemates is the sassy and shrewd Lydia.
She puts Betelgeuse through many tests that he could have not expected, and wins over the minds of the Maitlands in the process. As this unconventional group of social misfits tries to find common ground and develop their own individuality, incredibly funny escapades ensue, whether they are living or dead.
