The love affair of Romeo and Juliet has long been known as one of the most tragic stories across multiple generations, with the main protagonists' zealous love for one another resulting in their choice to commit suicide. Utilizing Shakespeare and his wife, Hathaway, as characters in the musical itself though, the worldwide and fresh musical, & Juliet, places in a new twist by allowing Juliet to discover what life has to offer after Romeo's suicide and focusing on her own coming-of-age story. Wishing to escape Verona with Juliet's equally-committed friends, the characters are opened up to a new way of life beyond what they were accustomed to after they come to Paris.
Having been produced four centuries after the original, the musical also chose to apply execution that fits current times. To deliver its message across to the theatergoers, ‘& Juliet’ showcases a collection of numbers taken from pop music’s best producer, Max Martin. The Swedish record producer already had intentions of creating a musical around all his songs over his career, which prompted the musical being launched and subsequently debuting in 2019. Max Martin gave complete freedom in the usage of his numbers to the play, stating that he “wanted every song to feel like it was written for the musical, and to have audiences feel that even if you have never heard any of my songs, the audience should discover their love for his hits again.” The existing play now has the tracks from global artists such as Celine Dion, Demi Lovato, Adam Lambert, and The Backstreet Boys, among others. Thanks to its modern score, the play enabled a new way to appeal to a new fanbase to Broadway.
