Descend into an underworld where the Fates weave their threads through song — Hadestown LIVE from May 7 to 12 at the five-star Belk Theater of the Blumenthal PAC! Directed by Rachel Chavkin, this 8x Tony Award-winning musical revives a perennial tale of love and faith from popular Greek mythology, adapted into an acclaimed book and score by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. Antonio Rodriguez) and Eurydice (Amaya Braganza), two lovers born in a place ravaged by famine, winter, and the uncaring claws of capitalistic greed. Hadestown features two and a half hours of a sung-through musical teeming with folksy jazz numbers such as “Wait for Me” and “All I’ve Ever Known.” Apart from its Tony wins, the production also clinched several awards from the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle, not to mention a GRAMMY for Best Musical Theatre Album. “Spellbinding.” – Variety
“An affirmation of art’s transformative power, with the sort of musicality you rarely hear on Broadway.” – Rolling Stone
Bear witness to an immortal Greek tragedy reimagined by acclaimed singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell as one of Broadway’s latest smash hits! Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Hadestown presses onward with its North American tour, now closing in on three years on the road, featuring new actors, dates, and venues for fans to enjoy. On May 7, the production will land a series of shows at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s Belk Theater, which will run up to the 12th with eight performances that’ll burn a mark deep into the fabrics of Fate.
A lyre, a song, and a dream of spring. Starry-eyed musician Orpheus sees the world for what it could be, not for what it is, staving off the bite of winter and famine with a vision to write a melody that will usher in the season of flowers. In an unassuming night bussing bar tables, he crosses paths with Eurydice. Smitten, Orpheus professes his undying love to the woman, which she eventually reciprocates as they move in to start a life together. But the absence of food and firewood proved too much. Poverty’s shadow looms still. The three Fates sang of a place where salvation is promised, in the underground labyrinth of Hadestown… And so, we descend into the darkness.
“Sumptuous. Gorgeous. As good as it gets. You wish you could live in the glowy moment forever.” – The New York Times
In two and a half hours of a thrilling tale dressed in devilishly sharp set pieces and outfits, audiences will accompany Orpheus on his journey to rescue Eurydice from the iron vice of a capitalist industry. Hadestown borrows from Greek mythology’s greatest tragedy and reshapes it into a heart-wrenching romance that reflects our current times through themes of dreams and doubts. Faith and fear. Love and loss.
Created by songwriting visionary Anaïs Mitchell, from whom it owes its book and score, this musical enlists the efforts of Drama Desk Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin and a similarly accomplished band of actors and backstage creatives. It features a soundtrack that won Best Musical Theatre Album at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, showcasing a chromatic blend of folk root traditions and classical jazz in songs such as “All I’ve Ever Known,” “Wait for Me,” and “Road to Hell.”

“Returning is even more comfortable than that; the role of Persephone is like coming home! Having the opportunity to perform with Hadestown again means the world to me in many ways,” Lana Gordon shared her excitement from reprising her role in a recent interview.
Despite its relatively recent success, Hadestown traces its origins to a Vermont production in 2006 and a limited Massachusetts tour in 2007. Six years since creator Anaïs Mitchell’s 2010 concept album, the show debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop for its Off-Broadway stint, featuring 15 new songs and additional character dialogue. Its popularity here would later spawn renditions in London and Canada, culminating in a mainstream breakthrough on the fated night of March 22, 2019.
“Your next musical theater obsession.” – Vogue
“Rachel Chavkin is fearlessly innovative. Her wildly inventive production arrives on Broadway with a furnace-like blast of creativity.” – The Hollywood Reporter
Hadestown’s Broadway premiere launched at the Walter Kerr Theatre, where it still persists to this day after clinching the venue’s record for longest-running musical with 918 performances played. During that year’s award season, the production claimed several wins from the Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Drama League Awards. It also famously won eight from the 73rd Tony Awards, the most for the night, including several design categories, plus Best Musical and Best Original Score.
Today, Hadestown presents a widely applauded West End run and a North American tour that’s set to hit cities near you! Experience this rousing yet wretched story of epic Greek proportions in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, which will host a series of shows from May 7 to 12 LIVE at the Belk Theater. Review for The Harvard Crimson by Millie Mae Healy
“From beginning to end, the performance of the ensemble was excellent, both in creating the world of Hadestown and supporting the principal characters’ arcs. The work of lighting designer Bradley King was also effective, with different colors emphasizing different characters during the loud ensemble numbers. The North American Tour of ‘Hadestown’ features great performances, creative staging, and production choices that add more texture to the already touching and cathartic musical.”
