The musical narrates the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a little lion cub called Simba, who is next in line to rule as the King of the Pride Lands succeeding his father. The African safari however is still a dangerous place, as even in this pure and childlike plot, disaster comes when the young lion's father and King is killed as a result of the actions of his evil uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of the Pride Lands. The immature prince chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into self-imposed banishment lasting a long period of time. While away in the forest, he meets new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who live a worry-free lifestyle and influence him to do the same. the young prince's relaxed demeanor then takes a turn when he once again chances upon his long-time friend Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and asks him to save the people of his land.

This incredibly powerful story of heartbreak, true friendship, and fearless leadership is amplified by the iconic and emotional music, written by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original songs, supplemented with more compositions and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have served as the foundation of the show not just in the United States, but also in international productions.

The Lion King debuted on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The musical took the theater world by storm and set a standard for contemporary theater, leading to the musical's move and beginnings in Broadway, New York on October 15, 1997.
