The musical narrates the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a young lion cub called Simba, who is fated by birthright to lead as the King of the Pride Lands succeeding his father. The African safari however is no stranger to political machinations, as even in this often lighthearted narrative, tragedy strikes when the young lion's father Mufasa is killed as a result of the intent of his estranged uncle Scar, who plans to usurp the throne of these lands. The young Simba chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into hiding that spans years. While away in the forest, he runs into new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, who live a worry-free lifestyle and influence him to do the same. Simba's easygoing lifestyle then turns upside down when Simba once more encounters his childhood companion Nala, who encourages him to return to the Pride Lands and asks him to save the people of his land.

This incredibly powerful story of tragedy, unfound courage, and fearless leadership is intensified by the iconic and emotional music, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, coupled with additional music and lyrics from the likes of Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of the show not just in the United States, but also in Europe and Asia performances.

The Lion King began on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It took the theater world by storm and was praised for its unique execution, ushering in the musical's transfer and reopening on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
