The tale of Disney’s The Lion King starts in a vast savanna territory in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the teenage Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before disloyalty is revealed because of the work of his evil uncle Scar and his intention to rule the Pride Lands and become King himself. The first act's series of events leads to the young prince's escape from his rightful place and the account of his ultimate journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.

The 1997 Broadway play, since its creation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and history given the show's context. The plot itself is actually founded on previously existing African leaders and actual events – Simba being the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was justly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female in Broadway history to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, particularly design, which paved the way for a faultless Broadway production of the musical. The costumes in particular are perfect portrayals of several traditional people in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s costume in the musical which in fact copied from Kenyan Maasi fighters' outfits. Just like the original 1994 movie, the remarkable musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African inspiration, with the live adaptation even adding compositions with lyrics that are sung either partially or completely in African dialects such as Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in dance numbers, with a lot of the performances showing off the grace of Bali-inspired choreography.

The regalia, African influence, and lifelike stage design all blend together so well to make up an excellent musical. On Wednesday 4th September 2024 and at Charlotte, the acclaimed Lion King is hosted in Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center - visited frequently by locals and foreigners for hosting the premiere shows and plays owed to the greatest facilities and topnotch equipment that show venues can muster.
