From the time of its global premiere in September, 1980, Les Misérables continues to inspire fans and remains to be one of the most spectacular experiences in modern stagecraft, because of the musical's tragic and passionate story of the musical's characters and the emotional musical scoring that goes hand in hand with the plot.

Whether this is your first opportunity to watch this iconic play or a repeated experience, each viewer is sure to depart Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center with a heavy but full heart and endless praise for theater. Be first in line and purchase your seats while you can, since one of the finest shows from Japan and West End will only be performing for a limited season in Charlotte!

Four decades ago, a star show was born when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil created the initial stage screenplay for Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was adapted and turned into a theater play performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that decade.

After an initial showing in Paris, there was already overwhelming support to create a more accessible adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the musical score, he was so inspired and announced he was going to produce an English adaptation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new songs. The English version of Les Mis only debuted with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its astounding success and larger audience with the English version, the show quickly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and superior venue, and ran for 19 years. The West End play then relocated one more time to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until today. If you include all its productions since its inception in 1980, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running musical in the entire world.

With 37 years in West End alone and not even listing its tours in other cities, especially its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that Les Mis continues to be awe-inspiring in the perspective of the musical’s audiences. The storyline and the epic musical score, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality because of the revealed passion behind the mask of each character and act presented. The musical has become so successful that the play has been adapted to movies repeatedly and gained loyal fanbases even on another platform.

This approaching May’s season of Les Mis has it in North Carolina, where the show will be performed on Thursday 22nd May 2025, in Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Charlotte.
