An intriguing twist to the writing of "Six" was that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss used actual musical icons to model the characters. They took inspiration from singers like Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys during character creation.

"Six" is the retelling of the lives of the wives of King Henry VIII, who was an infamous king of England in the early 1500s. During his nearly four decades of rule, he had six marriages. His demands to leave his first marriage saw the separation of the Church of England. Many people probably are familiar with the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not know the story of his six wives. That’s where "Six" enters the picture.
The musical focuses on the story of the six queens as they tell their individual experiences with the king. The queens compete for who had the most awful experience in being married to the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, infidelity, and even beheadings in a way that amuses you while also touching your emotions. They even place a contemporary twist on the story by incorporating a dating app through a parody.
Eventually, they realize that arguing over who had the most awful time with Henry VIII is not helpful. They come to realize that Henry VIII took their individuality. They are not just the six wives of a terrible king - they have their personal strengths that deserve celebrating. The ex-wives eventually come together to write new endings to their lives. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by imagining what their lives would’ve been like without meeting Henry VIII.
