Musical creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, fresh off the huge success from his last Broadway production, In the Heights, conceptualized Hamilton for a couple of years before it opened in the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2015. It was in this first run that he also acted the lead role. The whole production, including its stellar cast and unforgettable music received extremely positive praise from both critics and the audiences alike.
Hamilton, as almost all know, is a historical story created about one of the Nations Founding Fathers, but the Musical takes a contemporary and modern approach, as seen in the music styles used and more so in its multicultural cast. Also, the 2016 Tony Awards, where Hamilton was awarded 11 out of 16 nominations, is a display of its success. Hamilton’s original cast was made up of the actors and actresses, Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jonathan Groff. Individually, the cast was already filled with both famous nominees and previous award winners, but their varied and rich performances taken collectively brought Hamilton to a whole new level. The creative team, just as incredibly talented, took home Tony Awards for Hamilton. Thomas Kail for Best Direction, Andy Blankenbuehler for Best Choreography, Alex Lacamoire for Best Orchestrations, Howell Binkley for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Paul Tazewell for Best Costume Design of a Musical, and of course the man himself Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, all stole the show at the 2016 Tony Awards. Above all and unsurprisingly, the Musical also won Best Musical for the year. The current cast and production crew in each new location where Hamilton is on tour brings the same energy and inspiration in their shows, with favorable reviews maintained regularly.
The Musical’s meteoric rise to fame led to opening many doors worldwide for audiences to experience the Musical. It has continued for the past 10 years to perform not just in America, but also over in the UK's West End and in various venues across Asia. The Musical’s touring production will be making its way to Charlotte throughout January (and on Sunday 19th January 2025) at Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, performing at one more world-class stage with the unrivaled facilities and sound engineering that could surpass even Broadway and West End theaters.
